Course Description:

 

The student develops concepts about self, human relationships, and the environment using elements of drama, dance, music, and the conventions of musical theatre. The student interprets characters through acting, singing, dance using voice and body expressively and creates dramatizations called for in a musical script. The student applies design, directing, choreography, and musical theatre production concepts and skills. The student relates musical theatre to history, society, and culture. The student responds to and evaluates musical theatre performances.

Elements of the Course:

Foundations of Musical Theatre Performance:

Students will develop standard warm-up techniques to prepare them for musical theatre productions. They will learn and practice appropriate acting, dancing, and singing techniques. Students will use vocabulary to define and analyze musical theatre terminology. Students will explore the audition process using quality musical theatre literature. Students will develop techniques for auditioning and performing. Students will develop characters based on social and emotional dimensions of musical theatre characters.

 

 

Musical Theatre Production

Student will be able to identify and explain specific technical elements needed for a musical production. Students will understand and explore various components and responsibilities associated with productions.They will to collaborate and contribute to the creation of live musical theatre performances.

 

 

Historical and Cultural Relevance

Students will be able to recognize and explain the influence of heritage, culture, and historical periods on musical theatre styles. Student will investigate and report musical theatre styles and trends throughout history in a social and cultural context.

 

 

Critical Evaluation/Response

Students will constructively critique their own performances and their peers.

 

Portfolio & Musical Theatre Education and Career Opportunities

Students will understand the use of resumes and portfolios. Students will create and develop their own resume and portfolio throughout the course. They will connect musical theatre skills and experiences to higher education and careers.
